Three things come from that. It's water-resistant and shrugs off humidity, condensation and the odd wipe with a damp cloth, none of which paper survives. It holds its own shape instead of curling, and it won't crack or shatter the way glass does, so it travels well. And the pearl layer gives the artwork a depth and a shine flat stock can't reproduce — colours sit deeper, blacks stay black.
